Exclamative Adverbs

Exclamative adverbs (avverbi esclamativi) are used to introduce statements, announcements, or proposals. Following is a list, with examples, of the most common exclamative adverbs.

NB: Exclamative adverbs can also be interrogative adverbs, but they are used in statements and not questions.

come Come puoi credere a queste balle! How can you believe these lies! Com’era bello nuotare nell’acqua fresca della piscina dopo aver guidato tutto il giorno! How nice it was to be swimming in the cool water of the pool after driving all day!

dove Vai dove ti pare! Go wherever you like! Guarda dov’è finito il gatto! Look where the cat wound up!

quanto Quanto sono felice rivederti! How happy I am to see you again! Quanto sei bello! How handsome you are!

quando Ma quando mai sei venuto a trovarmi! When have you ever come to see me! Ci riposeremo quando pioverà! We'll rest when it rains!

perché Perché si comporta sempre così male! Why is he always behaving so badly! Perché (mai) ho comprato questo vestito che non mi sta! Why (ever) did I buy this dress that doesn’t fit me!
