Three of the most important irregular verbs in Italian are avere (to have), essere (to be), and stare (to be, to stay, to remain). See the table below for their conjugations.

I. The verb avere is used in many idiomatic expressions which describe someone’s state of being. Notice how these expressions in English are generally conveyed with the verb “to be.”
